Hendrickson, a global leader in reliable ride solutions for the commercial transportation industry, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of its STEERTEK™ axles, a milestone that underscores the product’s lasting role in front steer axle innovation for commercial vehicles. As our first fabricated front steer axle, STEERTEK™ delivers a durable, lightweight alternative to traditional I-beam axles for on‑highway and medium-duty trucks, buses and motorhomes. Today, more than 800,000 STEERTEK axles have been fabricated and assembled in the United States and driven throughout North America.
STEERTEK™ serves as the foundation for OEM front suspensions as well as Hendrickson integrated systems, including SOFTEK® and AIRTEK® NXT, helping fleets achieve greater efficiency and proven performance across a wide range of applications. STEERTEK’s value starts with its fabricated construction, providing an effective balance of weight savings, durability, and long-term performance. Since its introduction in 2001, Hendrickson has continuously enhanced the platform to deliver additional value to fleets and OEMs.
A major milestone came in 2011 with the introduction of STEERTEK NXT, which further enhanced durability through implementing a continuous beam architecture and integrating the axle seat into the beam. This innovative design also incorporated premium bushings and seals to improve protection and extend recommended service intervals.
Further advancements followed in 2018 with the introduction of Integrated Air Disc Brake (IADB) knuckles, helping customers realize additional weight savings.
From 2017 through 2021, STEERTEK NXT expanded into fire & rescue, medium-duty and bus applications, extending the axle’s benefits to a broader range of vehicles and duty cycles.
Most recently, in 2025, Hendrickson announced the newest advancements in STEERTEK NXT, reducing axle weight by up to 25 pounds compared to the previous generation. This enhancement helps provide fleets increased payload capacity while supporting greater operational efficiency.
At the core of the ongoing evolution of STEERTEK is the customer. The axle is engineered to help fleets maintain alignment, reliability and serviceability throughout the life of the vehicle. Its two-piece knuckle with a permanent kingpin simplifies maintenance by allowing the service of the knuckle and pin without removing the kingpin.
